Club History
Crowborough Runners was formed in the
good ol’ days of ’82 when a
bunch of nutters at Crowborough Squash Club got together after watching the 2nd
(!) London Marathon and decided it was time Crowborough hit the running scene.
Wasting no time, an advert was placed in the Courier asking people in
Crowborough whether they were interested in running, and if so to come along to
a meeting at the football club. The small hall was packed to the roof with 30
people ( must have been a good advert ) and
the club was formed, there and then, as
Crowborough Athletic Club. Some years later
there was a change of name to reflect the less athletic ( we don’t do track
and field really ) Crowborough Runners.
Today,
Crowborough Runners boasts about 70 members covering a range of abilities, from
marathon runners, to 10kms, to running for fun. All with the aim of
trying to improve our running along with having a good time.
We have members of all ages from 10 to 75 – so it’s not too late
to start!
We
compete in the Sussex grand prix race series, where it really counts to have
good numbers of runners out, and regularly come in the top three. In addition we
also run the South Downs Relay – a great but tiring day out ( the Sausage
Sandwiches at the end are well worth it anyway ), and other local races. We
organise the Crowborough 10k road race, infamous for its hills, and a chilly
cross country run in January.
On a less competitive, more social, note we
have: a great mid-winter Xmas party involving no running whatsoever ( actually
it still gets quite competitive, but more in the festive spirit kind of way );
Boxing day run; running pub crawl round Crowborough ( aka how to make yourself
look really stupid on a Saturday night down ‘The Cross’ ); and a summer
picnic at Bewl Water ( but you are encouraged to run for your lunch ! )
If you’re at all tempted to join
us, come along and introduce yourself at any of our training sessions (see
'Meetings' below) and
get stuck in ! With thanks to those nutters at Crowborough Squash Club who
started it all…. ( John Hyem, Dave Crosby, Brian Wright and Norrie Hazel …
some of whom still run with us! )
